Alexandre war seit einem Tag verschwunden, doch seine Sachen waren noch da. Den Nachmittag darauf galoppierten drei Reiter die Burganlage hoch, als wären sie von Furien gestochen worden. Einer davon war Graf de Mans, Yvonnes Vater. Mir stockte fast der Atem.

Ich hielt inne, mein Sattelzeug zu flicken und ließ alles fallen. Ich musste Yvonne warnen, das war alles, was jetzt zählte. Ich sprang die Treppen hinauf in die Eingangshalle der Burg, als ich hinter mir Stimmen hörte: Es war Pierre, der ehemalige Novize, mit dem ich damals zusammen, auf meinem ersten Botenritt, Yvonne abgeholt hatte.

"Iß noch etwas", forderte Dani mich auf und schaufelte mir, ohne eine Antwort abzuwarten, noch etwas von der Suppe auf den Teller. Der Eintopf, den sie vorher gekocht hatte, bestand eigentlich nur aus reichlich Hirschfleisch, Zwiebeln, Kräuter und Knoblauch. Und zur Feier des Tages, so wie sie es nannte, hatte sie sogar etwas von dem Salz hinzugegeben.

"Du... du jagst selber?", fragte ich verlegen und sie tätschelte mir das Knie, als ob ich ein kleiner Junge wäre, dann lachte sie wieder frech. "Meinst du, das Wild springt freiwillig in meinen Kochtopf, Hale?"
